We all love Olive oil right? It comes as a surprise to some people that olive oil production here in Spain has its own “Denominació d’Origen” just like wine, cheeses or cava. This means that each region has its own protected and certified assurance of origin and quality.

Olive oil from the Emporda region, Catalonia, Spain.

The earliest traces of olive oil production found in Empordà region date from the late Bronze Age but the cultivation of olives are attributed to the Greeks, who arrived in the sixth century BC. The Greeks founded colonies at Empúries and Roses which would soon become important commercial enclaves. After the Greeks, the Romans continued the cultivation of olives which has endured to this day with an area of over two thousand acres of high quality olive oil production.

Just like the various types of grapes that produce different wines, there are different varieties of olives which produce an array of olive oils with different tastes and aromas. Specific varieties to the Emporda region include Argudell, Corivell and Verdal. The variety Arbequina is a more recent introduction.

A selection of some local producers include Oli Ylla-1873, Oli SerraFerran and Ermedas.
